OpenAI Removes Chat Limitations for Free and Go Users with New GPT-5.6 Luna Updates

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is expanding access to ChatGPT for Free and Go users by eliminating text chat restrictions under GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced that unlimited text conversations will be available starting next week, with safeguards against misuse still in place. During this rollout, Luna will serve as the default model for these plans. Simultaneously, Free users will receive a Think button. This feature enables the model to spend additional time reasoning through more complex queries before generating a response.

The new allowance applies specifically to standard text interactions and does not extend to all functions within ChatGPT. Limits will still be enforced on image generation, file uploads, and other tools that require extra computing power. OpenAI mentioned that the Think button will be available alongside unlimited text access next week. Users can activate it when a question requires more detailed reasoning. This update broadens the core conversational capabilities for Free and Go accounts, while maintaining separate restrictions for other tools and services.

GPT-5.6 is composed of several models, including Luna, Sol, and Terra, each designed for different performance needs. Luna is the faster and more cost-effective option within the lineup. OpenAI indicated that approximately one billion people use ChatGPT weekly for tasks such as research, planning, writing, and search. With this update, Luna becomes the main ChatGPT model for Free and Go users. Other GPT-5.6 models remain accessible through various products and plans tailored for different workloads and access levels.

Broader free access paired with persistent tool restrictions

Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro now have access to an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model. This model is intended for routine use and more intricate reasoning. The company stated that Sol now provides more concise answers and minimizes unnecessary details when shorter responses suffice. Paid users also gain a reasoning slider on web, mobile, and desktop platforms. This feature allows users to adjust how much processing power the model applies to a request. It can be useful for research, coding, writing, planning, and other tasks that demand different levels of reasoning.

OpenAI additionally shared results from internal testing focused on factual accuracy in its latest models. The tests involved financial, medical, and legal questions requiring detailed factual responses. The company reported a reduction of about 62% in answers containing at least one factual error with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. GPT-5.6 Sol showed an even greater decrease of around 68%. OpenAI also noted improved performance in handling dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when such details influenced the response outcome.

New protections integrated into models for younger audiences

Safeguards have been added to the GPT-5.6 models to protect users believed to be under 18. These measures address romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that might encourage users to replace real-world relationships. Restrictions also apply to sexual content, eating disorders, risky activities, prohibited goods, and graphic violence. OpenAI explained that it implemented additional assessments for responses involving minors. These abuse protections will stay in effect for Free and Go accounts when unlimited text conversations are introduced as part of the expanded ChatGPT access.

This rollout covers the main ChatGPT service and does not impact all GPT-5.6-based products. Versions of GPT-5.6 Sol operating in ChatGPT Work and Codex remain unchanged by this update. Both Plus and Pro subscribers can now access the enhanced Sol model and reasoning controls. Meanwhile, Free and Go users will receive Luna as their default model this week. Unlimited chat and the Think button are scheduled to be available next week, with separate limits still applying to images, uploads, and other resource-intensive features.
