US Travel Advisory Updates Belgium Warning to Include Crime and Terrorism Risks

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The U.S. State Department has amended its travel advisory for Belgium, now highlighting concerns about crime and civil unrest alongside existing risks. The update issued on July 23 maintains Belgium at Level 2, advising Americans to exercise increased caution. Terrorism remains part of the warning. This guidance does not recommend cancelling trips or staying away from the country. Instead, it provides details on security issues and practical precautions for travelers heading to Brussels and other Belgian locations.

US travel advisory flags crime terrorism in Belgium
Updated guidance highlights crime, terrorism and unrest risks for Belgium visitors.

The advisory alerts travelers that pickpockets and bag snatchers frequently target busy tourist hotspots. Extra vigilance is necessary at railway stations, airports, restaurants, buses, trams, and metro stations. Authorities also report incidents of purse snatching, phone thefts, and items stolen from vehicles. Visitors are advised to keep passports, cash, and electronic gadgets secure while navigating crowded areas. The State Department recommends keeping valuables out of sight and never leaving bags unattended, even briefly.

There are particular dangers for train travelers who store luggage on overhead racks or near train doors. The guidance points out a rise in luggage thefts on routes linking Brussels and Amsterdam. Thieves may create distractions or operate in groups to steal wallets, mobile phones, and small travel bags. Belgian Federal Police urge passengers to keep important belongings close at all times during their journey. It is also recommended to stay vigilant with luggage during station stops, boarding times, and busy transfer points between trains.

Theft Risks Are Mainly Concentrated on Transportation Networks

The terrorism section covers potential threats at public gatherings, hotels, dining venues, shopping districts, educational institutions, and places of worship. Parks, transit systems, and other crowded spots are also included in the warning. Belgium is currently rated at Level 3 on a four-tier threat scale. The country’s threat assessment body describes this level as serious. It indicates a perceived possibility and likelihood of terrorism or extremism. Tourists are advised to stay alert and follow directives issued by local authorities.

Public protests and strikes may also disrupt travel across Belgium. Large demonstrations can cause traffic congestion, delay trains, or hinder city transportation. Police may close streets or restrict access near protest sites. The advisory recommends avoiding demonstrations and keeping informed of local developments before traveling in affected areas. Travelers should verify train, bus, and metro schedules during strikes or major events. These precautions are recommended both in Brussels and other major cities.

Preparedness Measures Enhance Travel Safety in Belgium

The State Department suggests enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP. This service provides security alerts and assists the U.S. Embassy in Brussels in contacting citizens during emergencies. Travelers are encouraged to review entry requirements, local laws, and health guidelines prior to departure. It is also advised to carry copies of passports and important documents. Sharing your itinerary with trusted contacts or relatives can facilitate assistance from officials and family members in emergencies.

In case of emergency, Belgium’s primary contact number is 112 for police, fire, and medical assistance. For local police services, travelers can dial 101 within Belgium. The advisory also warns to exercise caution around banks, ticket machines, and ATMs, as thieves may watch distracted visitors. Staying updated with official notices and keeping emergency contacts handy are recommended during your visit. Currently, Belgium remains under a Level 2 advisory, with crime, terrorism, and unrest identified as the main concerns in the latest update.
