U.S. Map Display Shows American Flag Extending Over Canada, Mexico, and Greenland in Controversial Post

WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – President Donald Trump uploaded a map to Truth Social that depicted the U.S. flag spreading across a significant part of North America. The visual included Canada, Mexico, and Greenland, all beneath a design labeled “United States of America.” The image also extended into Iceland and parts of the Caribbean and Central America. Trump did not add any explanatory text with his post. The map retained geographic labels for the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of America.

Trump map shows US flag across Canada, Mexico and Greenland
The Truth Social map placed Canada, Mexico and Greenland beneath US flag imagery.

The map was posted at 10:43 a.m. EDT on September 7 via Trump’s official Truth Social account. The message contained no mention of border alterations, treaties, or government orders. Canada and Mexico continue to be recognized as independent nations with established borders. Greenland remains a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Iceland stays an independent nation. The image made no reference to any legal process that could change the status of these countries or territories under the U.S. flag.

This map was part of a series of other geography-related posts from Trump during that time. Earlier messages included images replacing New Mexico’s name with “New America.” Trump also promoted “Lake America” as a new name for Lake Ontario. His administration previously instructed federal agencies to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as “Gulf of America.” The president has also advocated for U.S. ownership of Greenland. Danish and Greenlandic authorities have rejected proposals to transfer control of the Arctic territory.

Mexico Responds to Map with Statement on Sovereignty

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum issued a response emphasizing Mexico’s independence and sovereignty. She affirmed that Mexico would not become a colony or protectorate of any other nation. Her remarks came in September, during Mexico’s annual celebrations of its independence. The map placed Mexico directly beneath the same U.S. flag pattern that covered Canada and other regions. The post did not include any legal document or bilateral agreement concerning the U.S.-Mexico border. Existing border arrangements remained unaffected after the image was shared.

The map also showed Canada entirely covered by the U.S. flag. Trump has previously suggested the possibility of Canada joining the United States. On September 7, he separately threatened restrictions on Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier unless it moved production to the U.S. Additionally, Canada introduced retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of U.S. goods after trade negotiations stalled. These trade measures were separate from the map post and did not alter Canada’s territorial or political status.

Greenland Remains under Danish Authority, Not Part of the U.S. Map

Greenland was prominently featured beneath the U.S. flag on the map. Trump has repeatedly expressed the desire for the U.S. to acquire Greenland, citing national security concerns. Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected U.S. ownership claims. The European Union announced a 200 million euro partnership plan for Greenland, covering 2026 and 2027. This initiative includes support for digital infrastructure, energy, education, and sustainable mining. In early September, Denmark also sent troops to Greenland for Arctic military training exercises.

The Truth Social post did not include any caption explaining the map’s purpose or legal implications. It did not announce any government policy, territorial transfer, or change to existing national borders. Mexico remains a sovereign nation, Canada stays an independent state, Greenland continues as a self-governing territory within Denmark, and Iceland retains its independent status. The image functioned solely as a presidential social media post without any official measure altering the legal status of any territory depicted.
