MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will limit the options for the Gemini model available to free personal account holders beginning October 9, 2026. Users without a Google AI subscription will only be able to access Flash-Lite through Gemini Apps. Access to Flash or Pro will be discontinued under the updated policy. Google outlined these changes in revised support documentation for its consumer artificial intelligence service. The new rules apply to personal Google accounts and do not cover accounts managed by workplaces or educational institutions.

Existing Google AI Plus subscribers will continue to use Flash-Lite and Flash after the policy change. However, their subscription will no longer include access to Pro. Google has not specified a single transition date for all AI Plus users. Instead, the company states that affected customers will receive an email indicating when their access will change. Subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra will still have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Flash-Lite is tailored as an efficient Gemini model optimized for quick responses and everyday tasks. Flash provides additional capabilities while maintaining speed across various request types. Pro is designed for more complex workloads, such as advanced mathematics, coding, and detailed analysis. Google claims the model can handle text, files, images, and videos while applying deeper reasoning. Responses from Pro may also take longer to generate than those from other Gemini models.
Paid Gemini subscriptions maintain broader model access
Google is also introducing effort levels—low, medium, and high—for models within a user’s plan. Higher effort settings allow models to use more resources for generating more detailed responses. This also reduces the remaining usage allowance for that account. Customers with AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions will gain access to Deep Think, which is intended for complex reasoning tasks. Google describes Deep Think as an option that uses maximum parallel reasoning to handle difficult requests.
These new restrictions follow earlier modifications to how Gemini Apps track usage limits. On May 17, 2026, Google introduced compute-based limits, with allowances resetting every five hours until weekly limits are hit. The calculation considers factors such as prompt complexity, features used, and conversation length. Advanced features and premium models tend to consume these allowances faster than basic requests. On July 24, Google extended the earlier usage-limit rules to users under 18.
Google AI subscription plans differ in usage allowances
Users without a Google AI subscription are subject to the service’s standard usage limits. AI Plus members receive double the standard allowance, while AI Pro subscribers get four times that amount. AI Ultra members can access either five times or 20 times the AI Pro limit, depending on their plan. Tools such as Deep Research, media generation, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think can use larger portions of these allowances. Consequently, paid plans offer increased usage capacity alongside wider model access.
The October updates apply solely to Gemini Apps accessed via personal Google accounts. They do not influence other Google AI services. Accounts managed by employers or educational institutions follow separate access rules, and developer services have their own policies. Users can manage, upgrade, modify, or cancel their Google AI plans through Gemini Apps and Google One. Starting October 9, free personal users will rely on Flash-Lite instead of Flash or Pro. Google also recommends keeping the Gemini mobile app updated as these changes come into effect.
