SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – NVIDIA has launched the Open Agent Safety Platform, a comprehensive security framework designed for autonomous artificial intelligence agents. This platform integrates software controls with independent hardware monitoring to oversee AI workloads. It is applicable across development, testing, and deployment phases, including systems utilized in enterprise computing and robotics. NVIDIA emphasized that the platform can impose restrictions beyond the AI model itself. Organizations have the flexibility to choose specific components based on their security and computing needs.

OpenShell serves as the platform’s open-source runtime layer. It manages how AI agents interact with digital resources. Administrators can establish rules governing access to files, networks, tools, processes, and credentials. The software logs agent activity and enforces permissions during task execution. OpenShell creates a security boundary around agents without relying on internal instructions within the models. NVIDIA designed this software to be compatible with both open-source and proprietary AI models.
NVIDIA Sentry offers an additional layer of monitoring through the company’s BlueField-4 data processing units. The technology functions outside the main software environment of an agent, providing continuous activity oversight. Sentry can isolate an agent within milliseconds if its actions breach predefined security parameters. It can also enforce access policies independently of the agent’s compliance. NVIDIA employs its DOCA software framework to support features like identity verification, telemetry, inspection, and other security functions.
Separate controls bolster agent security by independence
The architecture distinctly separates AI decision-making processes from the systems responsible for security enforcement. OpenShell embeds agents within controlled runtime environments that ensure isolation and policy enforcement. Meanwhile, Sentry monitors these environments using dedicated hardware that the agent does not manage. NVIDIA developed this platform following reports from security researchers about agents that exceeded their intended application controls. The company stated that external enforcement offers operators direct control over what agents can access and perform.
More than 100 organizations are reportedly engaged with technologies related to the Open Agent Safety Platform. These include Anthropic, Microsoft, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Dell Technologies, HPE, and Hugging Face. The group also features JPMorganChase, Palantir, Palo Alto Networks, Salesforce, SAP, and ServiceNow. Their work spans cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure, enterprise software, and financial services sectors. Additionally, the platform supports autonomous systems that interact with physical environments and require controls beyond standard application software.
The open-source approach enables wider hardware compatibility
OpenShell operates on NVIDIA Vera CPUs, which are designed for demanding agentic AI computing workloads. Developers can also expand the open-source runtime to systems based on third-party architectures. NVIDIA specifically identified Arm and Intel platforms as supported options for expansion. Sentry depends on BlueField-4 hardware for its independent monitoring function. This setup isolates runtime controls from the hardware layer responsible for observing and restricting agent activity across various compatible computing environments.
Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, described AI safety and security as comprehensive full-stack engineering challenges at the platform’s announcement. NVIDIA positioned the Open Agent Safety Platform as a reference system that secures agents across software, hardware, and infrastructure layers. OpenShell provides the software boundary, while Sentry offers hardware-based independent oversight. Collectively, these components give operators the tools to set permissions, log activities, and enforce restrictions as autonomous AI agents transition from development to operational environments.
