    US dollar remains near three-month lows amid falling Treasury yields and currency gains

    WASHINGTON, D.C. / RankWire.AI / – On Thursday, the U.S. dollar lingered close to a three-month low as yields on long-term Treasury securities declined. The dollar index hovered around 98.81 against a basket of six major currencies. Meanwhile, the euro reached approximately $1.1676, its highest point since late May. The yen appreciated to about 158.45 per dollar. Investors also digested new measures in the Treasury market along with details from the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting.

    Dollar hovers near three-month low as US bond yields retreat
    Treasury yields and Federal Reserve policy continue to shape global currency trading.

    The Treasury Department revealed plans for larger liquidity-support buybacks for longer-term U.S. government securities. The maximum purchase amounts will increase from $2 billion to $4 billion for qualifying operations. This change applies to nominal coupon securities in the 10-year to 20-year and 20-year to 30-year segments. These expanded operations are set to commence on September 9 and will run through November 4, marking the conclusion of the current quarterly refunding cycle.

    The announcement coincided with a significant decline in long-term government bond yields. The 30-year Treasury yield stood near 5.18% on Thursday, after falling during the previous session. Earlier this week, it peaked at 5.337%, the highest level since 2007. Lower Treasury yields can diminish the relative returns available on dollar-denominated debt. The Treasury Department is also expected to release an updated tentative schedule for the larger buyback operations soon.

    Major currencies strengthen against the dollar

    A number of major currencies gained strength as the dollar stayed below the 99 mark on its index. The British pound traded near $1.3604, close to its strongest point in three months. The Swiss franc exchanged hands at about 0.7999 per dollar. The euro maintained levels above $1.16 after extending gains from the previous session. Currency traders also monitored the yen, which recently moved close to the 160-per-dollar level that market participants watch carefully.

    Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s July 28 and 29 meeting revealed ongoing concerns about elevated inflation. Policymakers kept the federal funds target range steady at 3.5% to 3.75%. Nine officials supported holding rates unchanged, while three preferred an increase of a quarter-point. The Fed stated that economic activity continued expanding at a solid pace. Officials also acknowledged that inflation remained above the Fed’s 2% target.

    Details from the Fed meeting highlight ongoing rate discussions

    The minutes showed that several policymakers were prepared to endorse higher interest rates in July. Many participants indicated that tighter policies might be necessary if inflation failed to move toward the 2% goal. The central bank also maintained its approach regarding reserves in the banking system. It continued rolling over principal payments from Treasury securities at auction. The Federal Reserve’s next scheduled policy meeting is set for September 15 and 16.

    The recent decline in the dollar was driven by falling bond yields and market assessments of the evolving U.S. policy landscape. The dollar index stayed near levels last observed in May. The 30-year Treasury yield also remained below the 19-year high reached earlier this week. The upcoming expanded Treasury buybacks are set to begin in September, with the benchmark interest rate range remaining unchanged. These confirmed developments continued to influence trading in foreign exchange and U.S. government bond markets on Thursday.”}}
