NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Wednesday, U.S. equities closed lower after the Federal Reserve announced a 25 basis point increase in its benchmark interest rate. This move pushed the federal funds target range up to 3.75% to 4.00%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 631.21 points, a decline of 1.21%, closing at 51,461.90. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day 3.16 points lower at 25,978.42, while the S&P 500 dropped 34.55 points, or 0.46%, finishing at 7,551.81.

The decision was made unanimously with a 12-0 vote during the September policy meeting. This was the first rate hike by the central bank since July 2023. Officials stated that economic activity continued to grow at a steady pace. Domestic expenditure remained resilient, with productivity gains and capital investments maintaining their strength. The Fed also noted that employment gains aligned with labor force growth, and unemployment showed little change.
Inflation stayed above the Fed’s 2% target as the policymakers evaluated economic conditions at their September 15-16 meeting. The rate increase followed a period where borrowing costs remained unchanged after earlier cuts. It also signified a shift from the policy stance that had been in place for over three years. As the session closed, U.S. stocks moved downward, and Treasury yields increased across various maturities. Shares of smaller companies also declined during the trading day.
Fed projections indicate higher policy rates in 2026
Revised economic forecasts presented a median estimate of 4.1% for the federal funds rate at the end of 2026, up from a 3.8% median projection in June. Policymakers also provided median rate estimates of 4.1% for 2027 and 3.9% for 2028. These projections reflect individual officials’ assessments of suitable policy conditions. They do not serve as commitments for future interest rate decisions, which are determined during scheduled Fed meetings.
The median forecast for real U.S. gross domestic product growth was raised to 2.3% for 2026, compared to 2.2% in the June projection. The median unemployment rate was lowered to 4.1% from 4.3%. Policymakers also projected headline personal consumption expenditures inflation at 3.7% this year. Their median forecast for core PCE inflation, excluding food and energy prices, stood at 3.4%.
Treasury yields rise as major stock indexes retreat
Following the rate decision and updated economic outlook, Treasury yields increased. The two-year Treasury yield moved to approximately 4.73%, while the 10-year yield reached about 5.00%. The Russell 2000 index of smaller U.S. companies declined around 0.4% to 2,858.81. Across major U.S. exchanges, declining stocks outnumbered advancing issues. These movements reflect market adjustments to the latest official data on rates, inflation, and economic growth.
Despite Wednesday’s decline, the major U.S. stock indexes still show gains for 2026. The S&P 500 remains roughly 10.3% higher for the year, the Dow has increased about 7.1%, and the Nasdaq has risen around 11.8%. The session highlighted ongoing concerns about U.S. interest rates, inflation figures, and Treasury yields. The Federal Reserve will continue to analyze incoming economic information at upcoming scheduled policy meetings.
